Fix Your Eyes On Him

Hebrews 12:1-2

Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Good morning, Powerhouse family. You know, sometimes life can feel a bit like running the Birmingham Half Marathon, doesn't it? There are moments when the energy is high and you're feeling strong, but then there are stretches where the path seems endless, the hills are steep, and you just want to stop. Maybe you’re feeling a bit like that this morning, weighted down by the week’s demands or perhaps by something deeper.

Our Scripture today from Hebrews reminds us that we are indeed in a race. It’s not just any race, but one "set before us" by God Himself. And what a powerful image it gives us: "compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses." This isn't a lonely struggle; we're surrounded by those who have gone before us, cheering us on, reminding us of God’s faithfulness through the ages. It's an encouragement to shed whatever is holding us back – those "weights" and the "sin which doth so easily beset us." Think about what those might be for you this week: perhaps a lingering worry, a sharp word you regret, or simply the sheer exhaustion that makes prayer feel like too much effort.

But the real focus, the crucial instruction for running this race with patience, is to keep "Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith." He is our perfect example. He faced unimaginable suffering, "endured the cross, despising the shame," not because it was easy, but "for the joy that was set before him." He fixed His gaze beyond the immediate pain to the ultimate victory and the glory of being "set down at the right hand of the throne of God."

As we step into this Thursday, with the theme "Now is the Accepted Time" resonating in our hearts, let's consciously choose to look to Jesus. When that difficult conversation comes up at work, when family demands pull in different directions, when the bills seem to pile up, or when disappointment tries to sneak in, let’s remember His unwavering focus. He is our strength, our guide, and the very finish line of our faith. He understands every struggle because He's been through it all, and He's waiting to help us run our race well.

Key thought

What weights or sins are currently making your race feel harder than it needs to be?

Application

Today, when you feel yourself getting distracted or weighed down, pause for a moment and consciously bring your mind back to Jesus.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the race You have set before us. Forgive me for the times my eyes wander and I get entangled. Help me by Your Spirit to lay aside every weight and sin. This day, I choose to fix my gaze on Jesus, the author and perfecter of my faith, trusting in His strength and guidance. Amen.
