Near to the Broken
Psalms 34:18
The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.
Good morning, Powerhouse family. It's Saturday again, and for many of us, that means a slightly slower start, maybe a proper cuppa before tackling the weekend chores, or perhaps getting ready for children's activities or a trip to the shops. Life in Birmingham, like anywhere, has its ups and downs. Sometimes, without warning, those downs can hit us hard. A phone call brings bad news, a plan falls through, or perhaps we just feel a persistent ache in our spirit that we can't quite put our finger on. We might try to put on a brave face, but inside, we feel a little, well, broken.
Our scripture today from Psalms 34:18 reminds us, "The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit." This isn't just poetic language; it's a profound truth about our God. When we're at our lowest, when our spirit is crushed and our heart feels shattered by disappointment, grief, or even our own failures, that's precisely when the Lord draws near. He doesn't wait for us to pull ourselves together, to become strong again, or to present a polished, perfect version of ourselves. He comes to the raw, hurting places.
A "contrite spirit" speaks of a humble, repentant heart, one that is truly sorry for sin and reliant on God's mercy. It’s not about being weak, but about acknowledging our absolute need for Him. In our busy weeks, whether we're navigating tricky situations at work, managing family challenges, or facing financial worries, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. But this verse assures us that our God isn't distant; He's actively seeking to be close to those who are hurting and who humbly turn to Him. He is our deliverer, our rescuer, especially when we feel we can’t rescue ourselves.
This truth should bring us immense comfort and courage today. No matter what burdens you're carrying, no matter how bruised your heart might feel, remember that the Lord is not far off. He is near, ready to save and restore. Let us bring our whole selves, even our broken parts, before Him.
